Our Mission

We believe that every child and young person should be able to experience the benefits to their development and well-being of high quality, unstructured, outdoor play based on the Play Principles set out by Play England and as set out in the United Nations Convention of the Rights of a Child.

DKHAP believes that children and young people need safe spaces. We are aware of the challenges faced by many children and young people living in Southwark, and the importance of providing a safe space away from the challenges on the street or at home. DKHAP is committed to keeping children and young people safe at times when they are particularly vulnerable after school and during holidays.

We are determined to preserve this natural, green space at the heart of our community so that all local children have the opportunity to play outdoors and experience the positive effects on their physical and mental health.

DKHAP is committed to providing an inclusive, free open access space with activities open to all children and young people and provide a range of experiences to develop skills that enable them to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of life.

Our staff focus on the development of strong and trusting relationships with the children and young people across age groups and communities and help to support them to gain independence, learn life skills and deal with the challenges they face.

We recognise the playground’s importance in enabling young people to feel part of their local community. Our long-standing relationships with generations of local families are crucial to building community cohesion and offering support for parents who come to the playground with their children, helping to reduce feelings of isolation and stress.

DKHAP puts children and young people at the heart of its service design using a range of methods to ask for their feedback, input and ideas.
